Keep Oban glowing this Christmas
As winter deepens and daylight fades, the twinkle of festive lights becomes more than just decoration, it lifts spirits, brings warmth, and turns dark streets into places of joy and connection.
A few years ago, when council funding for Oban’s Christmas lights was cut, the Oban Festive Lights (OFL) Group stepped in and were determined to keep the town aglow. Through dedication and community support, they upgraded and expanded the displays, ensuring Oban sparkled through the season.
Why Oban’s Festive Lights need you
Now, more than ever, the town needs its festive glow. With rising costs and growing challenges, these lights offer more than a celebration They create a sense of togetherness and a beacon of hope in difficult times. While the OFL Group now owns most of the decorations, the cost of repairs, storage and transportation continues to climb. Without support, keeping Oban’s winter magic alive becomes ever harder.

‘It goes without saying that when the Christmas lights go on in Oban it brings the town alive and creates an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement for the festive season. With many locals and visitors coming into town the lights bring brightness to the dark winter nights. It is also important to remember the social impact the lights have on mental health. At a time when many are worrying its great to walk round the town and admire some of the great displays. It’s not an easy task finding the funds for the lights, but they are essential for everyone’s wellbeing’
